There are so many exercises you can do with just a tire that I will only list a few. All are total body workouts with excellent benefits. And, the equipment is free! Just go to a tire retailer or your city dump. Where do I start? The exercises and their workouts can be done with either large, medium, or small tires. A large tire comes from a tractor or earthmover. A medium tire comes from an 18-wheeler. A small tire comes off cars, trucks, and SUVs. And they come in different sizes for different sized people and different exercises. As pictured, use gloves for all. Keep rain from getting in the tires by either keeping under a carport or tarp.
Here is but a small list of the possible exercises with different tires:
.
TIRE FLIPPING Get a large tire, squat down, grab, lift up, and flip over.
.
OVERHEAD CARRY Hold a tire overhead and walk with it.
.
SMACKDOWNS
Use your choice of small tire. Squat down, grab with both hands to one
side, lift over your head, and smack it down on the other side of you.
Repeat going the other way.
.
OVERHEAD THROW Holding a tire overhead, push and throw it straight out as far as you can.
.
DRAGGING Using a harness (from http://www.performbetter.com/ or http://www.performbetter.com/
(APT) ) drag a tire on a road or driveway. Don’t do this on grass, or it will ruin the lawn.
.
SWINGS
Use your choice of small tire. Different swings need a different sized
small tire. One swing is by grabbing the tire held at waist height with
one hand on the upper side, one hand on the lower side, and swing it
across your body back and forth. Change which hands go up and down.
Another swing grabs a smaller tire between the legs while squatted down,
and up and over the head. Still another swing takes the tire as above
and swings it over your head and behind your back, and letting it fall
to the ground behind you. There are many more swings.
.
SLAMS Using a small
tire, hold it overhead with both hands, and slam it into the ground or
pavement while semi-squatting down. Using the legs makes this a total
body exercise.
.
LATERAL THROW Grab your choice of size small tire
from one side and throw it over your waist to the other side as far as
you can. Repeat going the other way.
.
THRUSTERS Hold the tire
overhead with both hands. Squat down, bring the tire down to your
shoulders, then, stand up while pressing the tire overhead. Repeat.
.
FRONT
THRUSTER Hold the tire by both sides in front of you looking through
it. Put first one foot then the other forward. Thrust it forward,
using your chest muscles. Repeat putting the other foot forward.
.
Adding
one more piece of equipment multiplies the amount of exercises that can
be done with tires. The added piece of equipment is a sledge hammer,
your choice of weight. By all means use exercise sandbags for Crossfit
and other functional fitness training. But sometimes mix it up!
