Happy holidays to you! If you are like me, you are exposed to lots of sweets and fats and generally bad food this time of year. So, how do we keep from gaining weight? After all, the 2 or 3 pounds that we gain each December mount up as we age. It is important to eat, drink, and be merry this holiday season. It would not be the season without it. But there are ways to keep the weight gain to a minimum.
The first thing to keep in mind is that Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day are each one day. There is no reason to extend any holiday indulgence past that one day. Of course there are leftovers to eat. But the main meal is the main event and it is of course part of our holidays to enjoy the food. And please enjoy the food. But again, there is no reason to extend this feast for a whole month or more.
As for the holiday meals themselves, my first advice is to eat as much of the meat dish as possible. Eat a little of the potatoes and vegetables, and even eat some of the sweet dessert. But keep the sweets to a minimum. And as for egg nog, limit your consumption of that and the whiskey that comes with it to a bare minimum.
What I say here is that you can enjoy the holidays and their rich food and drink. Just keep it to a minimum. And do not stop your exercise routine. This past Thanksgiving day was a workout day for me. And workout I did. So keep that in mind.
My next point is another simple one. Walk as much as you can through these shortest days of the year. The low angle of the sun and the short amount of sunlight make any type of walking, running, or exercise in general hard to do. My suggestion is to get a 4' shoplight and put it in your gym-room with one cool white and one daylight bulb. These two bulbs average out to the exact color tempurature of the noonday sun. And that is important to your mood. By lighting your gym room properly, it will make your workouts more fun and put you in the mood to do so.
So here it is in a nutshell. Keep the over indulgence of holiday meals to just the holiday itself. After all, it is only one day. Do not make it a whole week. And get out and walk. If the weather is bad, go to a gym and play basketball. I live in a small city that has two indoor gyms with plenty of basketball courts in them. There is a balcony that has a walking track. And it is open most of the day and evening.
And of course, get some exercise sandbags and use them for strength and power training. Merry Christmas, Xmas, and Happy New Year to all of you! Thank you for your business in 2014. We look forward to serving you in our fourth year, 2015.
